Leaves release tannins and organic compounds that condition the water, lower the pH, and slightly tint the water, which can reduce stress in turtles, fish, and other aquatic animals. Sunken leaves can also provide hiding and foraging areas for many animals.

Now, you can recreate these natural habitats with Zoo Med’s Turtle Leaf Litter. This Leaf Litter is made up of leaves from the Jackfruit Tree (Artocarpus heterophullus) that will slowly break down over time, adding beneficial tannins to the water.
